As you already know, an Ignite talk lasts 5 minutes, with 20 slides auto-advancing every 15 seconds. You can’t say, “Wait! I’m not done yet!” or “Next slide, please!” so you have to practice to get the timing right.
You don’t need to know how to use Powerpoint because there won’t be any animations or transitions. All I’ll need is 20 pictures with as little text in them as possible. That is, don’t think magazine ad — think billboard.
I’ll need your 20 images by February 23, 2010. You can submit the 20 pictures in any of the following formats:
- 20 pictures in a zip archive
- An email with the 20 pictures attached
- A Powepoint or Keynote file with 20 slides (remember, no animations or transitions)
The more personal the images (pics with you in them, of your actual project, etc.) the better. But just in case, here are some places you can find good, free pictures:
(1) Morgue File
Providing “…free image reference material for use in all creative pursuits.
(2) Flickr’s Creative Commons pool
Search the myriad photos people are sharing on flickr by the type of CC license.
(3) Image*After
From their site: “Image*After is a large online free photo collection. You can download and use any image or texture…and use it in your own work, either personal or commercial.”
(4) Stock.xchng
Close to 200,000 photos. Some gems in there if you look.
(5) Everystockphoto. Indexing over 283,000 free photos.
(6) Studio.25: Digital Resource Bank.
(7) Freepixels. About 2000 photos.
(8) The Photoshop tutorial blog. This cool blog has a laundry list of free photo sites.
(9) Robin Good has a good page dedicated to helping you find good images.
And of course, there’s good ol’ Google.
But remember: the pictures are there to enhance your talk — you, not the slides, are the stars of the show!
After you have the pictures you can add some text if necessary using Powerpoint or Photoshop. But remember: it’s better to just say the words than make your audience read.
And not to add any pressure, but if your talk is good, it’ll be featured in the Global Ignite website for the whole world to see
Here’s an Ignite talk every Ignite presenter should watch, and here are other Ignite videos to teach and inspire you in preparing for your own.
Anyway, if you need any help or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Once again, thanks for agreeing to speak and share your passion, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Thanks,
Ryan Tani
